Splice control
The problem
When splicing plies together on the bias cutter or during 1st stage tyre building, splice dimensions can vary according the ply tension, slippage and cutting accuracy giving rise to heavy or open splices which are potentially a source of defects in the finished tyre.
The solution
Sigmavision’s online splice measurement system comprises laser point sensors which are positioned above the 1st stage tyre building drum or above and below the ply on the bias cutter. The laser sensors are responsible for obtaining continuous displacement measurements that are coupled with an encoder input for ply position to calculate the splice dimensions. Read more
A dedicated software application, SCSS (splice control system software), acquires these data and constructs a profile for the splice at each measurement position. Typically the splice is measured at the left edge, centre and right edge. By comparing actual measurements with preset limits the joint dimensions can be determined to be within or outside acceptable tolerances.
System features:
Laser spot sensors mounted in a fixed positions above the 1st stage tyre building drum or above and below the ply bias cutter.
Detection of open and heavy splices.
Real-time display of measured and target joint dimensions.
Statistical reporting and network compatible.
Control I/O to the bias cutter / TBM PLC.
Simple to set up, operate and maintain.
Measurement accuracy to <0.02mm.
